DIY Repurposing

As most of you already know, we love repurposing, recycling, and redecorating. You can create such unique, one-of-a-kind home decor pieces, with some of your everyday items and add tons of personality and character to your home.

Let's start with old shutters and doors. We love incorporating these architectural elements into our home decor and, of course, the more chippy the paint, the better. For those of you that would prefer non-chippy paint, it's easy to apply a coat of polyurethane over your piece.

Hang shutters "as is" or simply set them on your fireplace mantle...

Use them to add another dimension to your artwork or large clocks...

They are adorable in a baby's room...

And one of our favorites is turning an old door, with a lot of history, into a sliding door...

Here's a photo that one of our customers sent us, showing how she used one of our old doors in her house.  It looks beautiful...

We love to see your DIY projects and photos, so please share them with us. Hopefully, we have inspired you!

Happy decorating!

Addendum 101

As mentioned in my last Blog, there is a lot of friendly competition within our family, so I wasn't surprised when I received several photo's from our children, attesting to the fact that they were definitely "the favorite" of their grandma and grandpa...

Wait who's that grandma took out to lunch?  Who took Alana to the beach...

Is that grandma giving Brian flowers or the other way around? Thank you grandpa for your "first autographed" softball...

Sorry Brian, grandma say's it's all about Chauncey today...and grandpa and I go wayyyy back...

Apparently, we also have a new group of "favorites"...great grandchildren!

And if it wasn't for Melissa, grandma and grandpa wouldn't have these beautiful great-grandchildren...

I think this is a good time to remind everybody that our annual family reunion is not too far off.  For anyone who needs a good photo op or needs to work on their ranking, myself not included, the reunion will be the perfect opportunity!

Finally, I'd like to point out that, I believe, this is the first "Addendum" ever written to one of our blogs, but let me double check on that with Donna...

To Be Continued...

Competition 101

Competition 101

Just one of the many great things about our family is our fun-loving competitive spirit, which brings us all a lot of laughs.

A good example of our competitive humor is that each one of us siblings claims to be our parents’ favorite. Of course, we like to affirm this with “your favorite daughter” gifts and cards.  I’m not including our brother here because, we’d all admit, he is definitely the favorite (son).

Somehow we have managed to pass this competitive character on to our children.  They all claim to be grandma and grandpa’s favorite…

Our father is one of the biggest Chicago Cubs fan's out there.  So when the Cubs played in the World Series, two of his grandsons drove to Casa Grande, Arizona, one from Phoenix, and one from Tucson, to watch every game of the Series with their grandpa.
Now, I’m not saying they did this to cement their ranking with their grandpa, but let’s be real, they are tied for #1.  Game on cousins…

Why am I sharing this with everyone? Well, Donna has always written our blogs and she is really great at writing.  Now that Donna’s plate is pretty full with running our shop in Wimberley, Texas, I volunteered (OK, I was asked) to contribute to the blog.
Need I say more…

4 New Starts

5. Blog more often!
I love to Blog ~ although that's probably hard to tell since it’s been a year since my last one! Oops!!  One of my New Years Resolutions ~ Blog More Often.   A lot happened in the past year too, so there was a lot to write about.  Perhaps we were too busy and put it at the very bottom of our “to-do” list (although those listed on this glass dish are definitely more important!)

Our shop in Wimberley is off to a great start.  After opening last March, we closed the shop in Cave Creek, AZ in June. One of the perks of this, is that Diana now has time to work on some art projects she’s been wanting to do.  She continues to make the beautiful wood crosses, has added some mixed media art and coming soon ~ original paintings.  Here’s a sneak peak…
We LOVE Sunflowers!!

I can’t wait to see more of her new artwork.  We will have it in the shop in early February. So exciting!  She’ll also be contributing to the blog, so I’m hoping she put that on her New Years Resolution list also.  :)

4 Some of the Positives in Life

Happy Happy Happy New Year!  It's going to be a great year... right?!!  I tend to be a very positive person, so I like to think it will be.  Last year we were in the midst of major home renovations at this time, so it's definitely going to be less stressful this year!  Although stressful, (and I had to keep telling my husband - "it's going to be great") we have enjoyed updating our home and getting it to the casual, rustic style we like and are comfortable with.  We're getting there!

One of my favorite pictures from the holidays of our (newly bricked) double-sided fireplace (kitchen side) with newly painted mantle.  The new stone facade now matches the other (living room) side as well.

Being the positive person I am (or try to be!), I LOVE decor with inspirational or positive words and statements.  I'll be honest though, I was probably a little bit too obsessed with it this past Christmas and bought a few too many "making spirits bright" and "joy" word blocks and pictures ~ but I found a place for them (of course) and they looked great! :)  When you think about it, I guess it's not a bad thing to have too many positive statements around.

Diana and I both like to have encouraging and inspirational items available at the shop as well. You'll be able to find them throughout the entire store ~ on wood blocks, plaques, hooks, stitchery, and even jewelry. Uplifting home decor and jewelry just feels good (and they make wonderful gifts too).  A simple quote can give you a new outlook on any given day!

Nice reminders to see, read, and ponder (love the word ponder). :)  Think about a place in your home that you would like to see/read something positive each day.

Enjoy your home, your life and promote happiness!

4 A Love of Learning

It’s mid-August which means school has started (or will be starting back soon) and a whole new year of learning begins!  Even if you’re no longer in school, learning is a continual process. Life would be boring if we weren’t always (or at least occasionally) learning something new ~ don’t you think?

We (Diana and I) continue to learn so many things … our favorites are what we learn about you ~ our customers and friends ~ about your lives, families, things you love and don’t love.  We hope you enjoy learning more about our family as well.  It’s a special connection to have and we appreciate that.

Here are 4 things that we’ve learned recently:

  • We’ve learned that everyone (ok, almost everyone) likes learning about how much of our merchandise has a personal story that comes with it.  It’s always been important to us, and it feels good to see it is for others.
  • We’ve learned that there are more cat lovers than dog lovers, at least in our shop!  Come on – step up dog lovers :)
(from Donna the dog lover who’s allergic to cats ~ Diana and her family are cat lovers)
  • We’ve learned that we’ll never be able to stop buying lights for the shop!  This is kind of a joke, but not really.  It’s just unbelievable how many are needed to light up a space in a shop!
  • And probably our favorite… We've learned how much we love it when customers love our things as much as we do.  We love hearing people get excited over what they’ve found!

We’ve slowly been learning what items people want - feel free to let us know too!  That was (kind of) a 5th thing learned, but 4 is our number so I’ll make it 4 ½!  :)

It’s always nice when summer comes around and you get to take a break from learning – but summer’s winding down and we’re ready for something new.  Come visit with us, we’d love to learn more about you!

New Year, New Home, New Colors

I love the start of a new year. Even if it's been a great year, I always look forward to whats ahead~ hopefully some exciting new adventures! It feels like a fresh start where anything's possible.

2015 has actually already started out with a new adventure - home renovation. We moved into a new (12 yr old) home right before the holidays, (I'd just like to say - don't ever do that!) :) and then we added a little more stress with some renovations. We truly are excited to create our own new space in a new house, but it's definitely been challenging living in it and going through the holidays during these changes.
Kitchen renovation in progress!
One of the spaces we needed to complete right away was our home office (so my husband and I could work - really important!) Making decisions on new colors (carpet, paint, cabinets) is not an easy task.  After finally deciding on a color, it took about 6 different samples before I found my perfect paint color! I overheard the sales clerk at Sherwin Williams say "everyone is wanting gray paint this year."  That was after I had already painted our office ~ a light gray!
Beautiful new office!
I'm not usually one to do what everyone else is doing, so it's a good thing that was finished. :)  I LOVE the gray walls, darker gray furniture and brown carpeting!! We did get furniture and "stuff" moved in. I'll post a completed picture once it's organized. Here's a sneak peek...

Whether starting from scratch with a brand new room, or just painting one wall, selecting the right color is difficult. There are so many variations of every single color and each one can look so different in each house. We now offer a color consultation service to help with those choices. We are happy to give you suggestions and work collaboratively with you to make your space feel like home.
Don't be overwhelmed, just give us a call (602-330-6042) or stop by the shop to set up an appointment if you'd like some assistance.  We'd love to help.

Here's to the start of 2015 ~ Let's make this the best year yet!
